Classic Game Room HD – INDY 500 for Atari 2600 review
Classic Game Room was the FIRST classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999. Returning in 2008 with new episodes, Classic Game Room breaks out a review of INDY 500 for the Atari 2600 video game console. The grandfather to games like Forza 2 and Gran Turismo 5 GT5 Prologue, this is INDY 500 for the Atari 2600. Race in the Indianapolis 500 against 1 other Formula one 1 F1 race cars in this early driving simulator, racecar game from 1978. Indy 500 uses the driving controllers for the Atari 2600, not the paddle controllers. So make sure you have the right ones before you try to play it or it won’t work. Race against a friend and have a great time in this excellent party game that had a variety of arcade style retro games, not just driving. Be sure to watch the original Classic Game Room episodes. Surprised nobody pointed out the easiest way to win, was to cross the start/fingish line, make a hard left, and keep it there. You just do donuts around the line, and click away about 3 laps for every single lap someone actually racing the course would get.
this game reminds me of what RC PRO AM would look like if it was on Atari.
Power sliding time.
can you play with the normal control too? because I don’t have the other that you show…
I was a maze craze fanatic myself.
WOW
this looks like something out of trailview (or whatever you call it)
good with a lot of other games though.
You sly dog!
This game was fun. Any racing game that lets you go off-track, even if there’s nothing really to see, just wins the prize in my book.
I wonder what the physical difference between the paddle controllers and these.
they should be.
im getting a atari so i will get this after i get A Driving controller.
bow-chicka-bow-wow
I should really learn to look up things I wanna buy before I bid… Oh well xD
@ Ap0ske
Unfortunately, no.
Are the driving controllers compatible with games like Super Breakout?
If not, I’ve just spend 15 bucks on Ebay for nothing… *sigh*
Well, I just picked this up with 2 driving controllers; me and my girlfriend will be having some old-school fun tonight:)
COOL
Sprint came out in 1976 and indy in 1978. You must confused it with super sprint (1986).
Sprint Came out in 1976
Indy 500 came out in 1978
Sprint came first.
Consoles back then often tried to bring the arcade expirence home.
Its ok but i dont have one where can i get an atari2600
This game came out WELL before “Sprint” did. If anything, Sprint was based on this game.

still play this game to this day….racing on the ice is like dirt track racing
*Cries a little, wipes my eyes* *Sniff* I so remember this game. Me and my brothers would play it so much. Even found ways to cheat and get laps done quicker without having to go all the way around! Thanks for posting!@
Clearly this game is based on the arcade game SPRINT with other features added. If you play Sprint and any of it’s sequels, you will see the similarities.
Wow this game looks like a lot of fun especially that other mode where the players compete and try to touch the square before the other player.
I don’t remember the driving controllers though hmmm…anyhow I’m a big fan of Super Sprint (it was a arcade game and also released on the NES by Tengen). It had the same viewpoint and a similiar control style. This game looks like a precursor to it in that regard.
@RedneckBart CART had just as much to do with the split as well.
LOL who’s Jack Villnev? i thought it was Jacques Villeneuve
@RedneckBart rofl, you’re a proper seppo redneck ain’t ye? nae fukin brains and nae facts, sense or logic at all ##
Tony George has killed open wheel racing in north american. His plan to have more american drivers and tracks has failed. 15years later and the same drivers are winning and none of them are american. (Marco and Dancia….LOL…..whatever happened to winning races makes you great driver. Look at their stats. They suck). 3hours to Indy green flag and I could care less. Think I’ll start watching the LeMans series and hit Mosport in the fall.
RIP Champcar. F**king die Idiot Racing League.
Jacques won this by 2 laps when you consider the penalty. Shows you how good the boy was.
It’s now the turning point for open wheel racing. It can only go up from here.
Totally agree with your description for this video, champcar4ever and RedneckBart! Tony George has nearly destroyed the majesty of the Indy 500 and all of open wheel racing. His grandfather must be rolling in his grave!
Thank gosh for the amazing creativity of the Indy Racing League. Wow did those Einstiens save open wheel racing or what……LMAO
@RedneckBart 100% right….i LOVED open wheel racing when i was a kid….
@RedneckBart always wonder what happend to Indy, cheers. So what is the dif between champ and indy. all very confused here in Europe re these series.
you mean the car that was 1 lap down?
Dammit Goodyear I wish you would have won the race!
i swear the yellow car won……………….
Yeah, I guess I am asking a lot. But until then, I don’t care about Indy Cars. They can’t go faster at Mid Ohio then a ALMS LMP-2 car? Pathetic….
Jacques wants to comeback to F1. Jacques is a driver that was better suited to the F1 cars of the late 1990′s not the current cars they had afterwards.
Physically i don’t think he’s at the level of Schumi.
I doubt he’ll have the sort of career he had with Williams.
Your hoping for a lot. BUT, there are signs of it improving. They are going to Brazil to help broaden the series get some fanbase growing. Talks of having various engine – chassis combinations.
Hopefully they’ll bring back turbo charged engines.
Once they get enough fans, they’ll add more tracks which the series desperately needs.
I was there. Last 500 I went too. Maybe if the IRL gets near the same level as CART, I might come back.
Thanks for the seats, 96 was a great race.
I agree, I attended the same seats at the 500 since 1981, ’95 was the last race cause I didnt care for the IRL. I like the idea of different chassis & engines, the IRL is too much like stock car racing….
Man, Scott Goodyear passed the safety car before the green flag and he was later penalised.
Canadians running one-two in the Indy 500, that is awesome.
they should’ve waited another lap to give the flag.
this is true but regardless goodyear should have never passed the pace car. jaques clearly saw what goodyear did and quickly slowed down
I remember watching this race on TV, and boy was I pissed when Scoot Goodyear made a douchebag of himself that day. I was rooting for him all the way especially because I wanted Honda power to win that race. Even now, I still don’t forgive him for this. It’s too bad we had to wait 9 years later for Honda to win Indy.
USAC/CART DIDN’T SCREW GOODYEAR, GOODYEAR SCREWED GOODYEAR (and I’m not talking about the horrible tire)!
Yeah, that’s pretty much the last 11 laps in 8 words.
