Why do you think some NASCAR fans became so upset when a black man entered NASCAR to race?

My attitude is: get over it! Segregation is long and gone.

NASCAR has gone to great lengths to get more minority participation in the sport. I have heard nothing negative from anyone. Brad Daugherty owns the #47 car driven by an Australian, Marcos Ambrose. Wendell Scott, a black driver, won a NASCAR race back in the 1960′s. If that is what you are talking about, I’ve heard that there were a few haters out there, but they are in the tiny minority of fans. Many NASCAR fans are also NFL and NBA fans and both of those leagues have a majority of black athletes

I am not exactly sure what you are referring to(Bill Lester,Marc Davis, etc.) but there are a certain amount of NASCAR fans(as in any sport or other facet of life) that are racist and hate it when someone of a different race come into the sport. It is just plain ignorance and is not tolerated in my mind or household. It gives me even more pride as a NASCAR fan when I see diversity in drivers, teams, etc.

There will always be some minor amount of people that don’t like it. Same thing happened when Juan Paul Montoya was introduced. So what-this is the 21st Century.

I don’t recall anything happening where a black man entered a race and the fans became upset? I am sorry but I am lost.

Personally I don’t care what color you are if you can drive a car and entertain me with your skills heck you could be a little purple man from the moon and I’d be alright with it.

If you can drive the car, color is never a factor in Nascar. Nascar does not give special handouts though. I think nascar fans get upset when people ‘fish’ in questions and assume that fans are racist. Which in turn makes the asker of the question or (person who assumes) look bad.

and your right they need to get over it, although i will say i haven’t heard anything about this either. but lets be real, racism is everywhere. but they don’t represent the vast majority of NASCAR fans.

Tell me about it.

You guys should see the Usenet NASCAR group (the unmoderated one). Lots of racist spam on there!

Are you referring to a particular incident or driver?

Wendell Scott faced the most discrimination. He raced in the 50s and 60s. Some drivers were only on the track to make sure that he got wrecked. He one won race but didn’t get to celebrate it in victory lane (they gave the win to another guy until a few days later when the press was gone). But even then there were drivers that helped him out. The Jarrett family was one. NASCAR treated him like crap and they were pretty open about it.

But since then, things have gotten much better. A lot of NASCAR fans don’t like minorities racing (that includes women), but a whole heck of a lot are more open-minded. There is still progress to be made, but it’s very different from the way things were when Scott was racing.

I dion’t know of any race fans who got upset when any of our black drivers and owners and managers came to NASCAR. Where is the link to the story? Or is this a made up question calling NASCAR fans racist in a backhanded way???

Out of all these answers only Boondie is right.
Wendell Scott is the only Man of color to win a Nascar race and have it taken away from him and then was awarded the trophy days later after the Bull shi# died down

who knows, I’m a beaner & I’ve been a NASCAR fan for years. I have yet to experience any kind of racism when I go to the races. Shoot, all that partying and hardly any security was weird to me, we Mescins can’t have any shindig without security cause you know some dumbass wet back will pull out a knife lol

well i feel most fans may think they get the ride just because of there race.. if the person can drive i don’t care what there race or sex is. just as long as they have earned the ride. An not just given to them because of there race or sex as some marketing ploy or just to add different races / sex into the sport. I don’t think any fan nascar , f1 or any other sport would like it if a person was left out or let in on there race or sex . The person need to have ability , talent , as well a good understanding of how the sport works. In nascar almost every one works there way up from go karts , sprints, dirt cars, or smaller stock car series.. If a person earns there ride and has paid there dues by racing and winning over many years fans don’t have a problem. If is there lives on the line out there they need to be able to trust every driver on the track with them. That comes knowing they have raced many years and knows how to drive the car and be able to think on the fly with out killing some one .
