Why is it that some people make some really stupid assumptions about NASCAR and NASCAR fans?
I really want to know why some people make some really dumb comments about NASCAR as well as NASCAR fans. First, yes there have been minorities involved in NASCAR as drivers…African-Americans(Wendell Scott and most recently Bill Lester)women(Janet Guthrie, Shawna Robinson, Erin Crocker as well as a few others)and drivers from other countries(Hideo Fukuyama, Ron Fellows, and I think there’s a guy from Germany who’s an active driver). And as for it not being a SPORT, as I stated before, driving a Nextel Cup stock car takes physical endurance. It’s not a Sunday drive or morning commute, people.
As for fans, we’re not all rednecks(I’m a college student majoring in psychology!! And I’m from the Northeast)and we don’t all live in trailers..I live in a townhouse. And we don’t collect welfare(Yes, I collect a disability check) but I’m going to college so I can work in my chosen field….no lazy slob here. So think before you speak.
because it’s the only real family sport left… and the guys are better men than most atheletes as role models.
Most of them can’t figure out the rules either..lol.. and don’t know how much skill it takes to keep a car on the track at the speed they go….
I am a well educated Mom who loved NASCAR since I was a child…it is the only "gentleman sport" around…
my son and I have met many of the drivers.. they are the most humble, kind hearted people you’ll ever met…

because some people are thoughtless and narrow minded. They make assumptions when they don’t actually know anything. You will find it with everything. You say you are majoring in psychology, some people would assume just from that, that you are boring and don’t have the intelligence to do anything else(I don’t assume that, just think others might). It is sometimes just the impression people get of a minority. English football fans are considered hooligans because the hooligans are the ones with the reputation. It’s just life.

Honey, don’t worry about the lamos who are ignorant to NASCAR. Their incessant failure to look at what all occurs in a race is indicative of their closed minds. If it was all about turning left, rednecks and the south it would not have the worldwide attention it has today.

Hell yeah and yeeee-HAW! I have no clue why people would make that assumption. I’m stumped. Good luck.

I love this. Finally someone who I really relate to and agree with. I am a 26 year old teacher, living in New York ( not very many Nascar fans up here )… but i am sooooo sick of the stereotypical comments about being trashy hillbillies or rednecks or drunk slobs. I also cant stand when people say its not a sport. Its one of the most intense sports out there. People need to open their minds a bit before they talk….. the ones who trash NASCAR know NOTHING about it. Its so much more than ‘cars racing around a track.’
NASCAR FAN FOREVER AND PROUD OF IT.

because they don’t show fans like you on the tv, all we ever see are the fat, drunk rednecks in tank top tee shirts hooting and hollering and making a joke of the whole process. Because of such people, the sport is ranked just above pro wrestling.

They do because they are more racist and discriminatory than those they make fun of. Most people think that race car driving (NASCAR or whatever your favorite driving sport) is a Red neck sport enjoyed only by white dumb Americans that live in the back country and make their own whiskey. NASCAR in particular has become a very main stream sport enjoyed by millions around the world.
Yes I did call it a sport, sure it’s not involving a ball and stick, but that doesn’t make it any less of a sport. The drivers place their life on the line even more so than most ball players (which ever ball you are talking about). It takes Guts, concentration, physical agility, and full on awareness to drive a car at high speeds and not killing or harming yourself or anyone else in the process.
I am not a huge NASCAR fan, I like NHRA, and Rally cars better, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the Driver or his/her just as important racing team. If anyone wants to argue this point, go ahead and try it yourself, and see how well you do at it.

You want to see real racing? Take a look at Formula 1.
Nascar is for wimps who couldn’t cut it in the big league.
So are their fans.
Go back to your townhouse and cry about it some more… maybe somebody will listen.

Because racing started in the south, people assume that its all rednecks, but the fact of the matter is that only 4 drivers from the south won races last year. Most drivers come from California these days.
