Why do some people think that Nascar racing is a sport?

This post was written by admin on November 9, 2009
Posted Under: nascar racing

I mean all they do is drive around a track like 300 times, I know that they are skilled drivers but they’re not doing any physical activity like running, walking, etc. It just doesn’t make sense to me when people claim that Nascar is sport, when all the drivers have to do is slide through the window.

Try going 300 times in a racecar on the track. You will be lucky if you can stand the pressure on you mind and body for 100 of those. It is physical activity. Try it some time- go to the Richard Petty Drivers School or one like it. You will change your mind fast. As far as being a "sport" it is more demanding than football or basketball or baseball. Try it before you knock it. As far as the other posters- you do not know what you are talking about.

because like in every great sport there is contact and going at speeds of 200 mph a crash is big and it looks cool….a lot may not consider it a real sport….i belive it to be a sport but not as big as football you just gotta see a lot of crashes and u might like it 2

Believe it or not, NASCAR is a sport. The key factor that separates an activity from a sport is where there is a defined winner. Anything where judges are used to determine the victor is not a sport, but merely an activity, such as cheerleading. And by the way, driving a car that fast for so long is actually extremely physically tiring.

it’s not just the drivers, there are the entire pit crews plus all the other jazz that goes into it… why do they call bird watching a sport all you do is sit and watch and how bout golf? I mean is that really a sport too???

You sit and that car and do it then. There is a strategy that must be followed as in every other sport. Its a mental game, one that you can not probably do if you can’t even understand that NASCAR is a sport.

Because they are unintelligent bums with just enough money to sit around drinking beer, scratch their butts, beat their wives and neglect their kids. This term is more commonly known as "Redneck".

Gatorade commercial on TV says drivers lose 10 pounds during a race. Presumably that is mostly fluids which can be replaced but that has to take a toll over three hours. And the g-forces on the body are not insignificant.

It’s a "man sport", I believe. They don’t ever have to ask for directions when the goal is to drive in a circle. ;)

I don’t respect the known racist, negative aspects of NASCAR heck what do you expect from something that was started from moonshiners in the sticks. Racism was ramped it still is whoopee Doo just look at the story of Wendell Scott for those who don’t know who he is on both sides.

But for one thing it is a sport if you have never been in a race car it gets hot in that racing suit. And think of a the longest road trip in the world with very small breaks aside from the fact that you are not just driving BUT racing and going darn FAST!! It WILL take a heck of a lot out of you with g-loads crashes etc. have you even been in crashes drove a race car THEN you’ll know what it feels like and what you have to deal with.

Everyone please dint take it out context like I said respect it for what it is. NASCAR is just one form out of many in the world of racing.

Leave your comments about anything else out of it don’t take it personal show your the bigger person MAN UP and show respect everyone. I say what I say because I know the history of NASCAR and respect it.

THE QUESTION WAS DO YOU THINK IS NASCAR A SPORT? AND HECK YEAH IT IS.

(LEAVE OUT THE BS YES WE KNOW WHAT BOTH SIDES ARE SAYING THERE IS MORE TO IT SO DROP IT ALL JUST SHOW RESPECT PLS.)

I think you need to attend the ‘Richard Petty Racing Experience" you will learn very quickly, why it’s a sport, why it’s so dangerous, and why it can give you the need for speed… Those boys are sweating and have to be in great shape to do what they do. Very competitive too… some day you might see, if you fall in love with one of them. :)

Some degree of physical fitness is required; however, the bevy of old men rather blies that thought. There is also some degree in driving around with your foot firmly on the gas while turning the wheel to the left. I would have to say that pit stops is the heart of the sport. If they don’t run over anyone and regain the field with most of their bumpers, then it’s a "sport." From my point of view, it’s only exciting when they crash, bone-numbingly boring for the rest of the time and if I hear "boogidy, boogidy, boogidy" one more time … I may go postal!

I am more surprised that you all call Basketball a sport. Or even Golf. What could be less physically challenging then that?

It would be easier to hear you answer how many other sports have a higher risk of death (besides foreign soccer because of riots) Oh, and try the Richard Petty Experience. Gives you a inside glimpse at how "easy" and "simple" it is to drive a race car.

Basketball- dribble dribble shoot
Tennis- bang … bang … bang … the crowds head moving back and forth is more enlightening.

Oh right how many other sports have amazing fiery crashes?

you are wrong my friend. after race day, a driver loses up to ten pounds a race. the g-force their body’s endure is punishing. i guarantee if you were strapped in the cockpit as a passenger you would have allready fainted after 3 laps.i live in vegas and got a gift for the richard petty diving experience.after 3 laps i had to pit. i’m in great shape. it beat me up. the mentality aspect is even more brutal.you have no idea what these ahletes go through. this a very grueling sport.

you couldn’t be more wrong…and all the people that are leaving the answers about rednecks, drinking beer, and white trash are extremely sheltered and obviously dont know the difference between there a$$ and a hole in the ground… i’m not sure i would call nascar a sport but if you spent the time to watch an entire race without convincing yourself beforehand that its going to suck then you will see that its interesting… (mute the tv because the announcers can annoy anyone)

i’d like to see any of you that is calling it white trash just because of the stereotypical nascar fan go out and race for 5 minutes at the speed they’re going while that close to other cars and not crawl out of that window with your pants damp

i for one am not white trash, and i love nascar, and i also enjoy making fun of white trash people, nascar is steadily growing on many different types of people and soon the white trash aspect will be bull****

so to answer your initial question…people think its a sport because its effing exciting to watch

nascar drivers have to have a lot of upper body strength, have you tried turning a car at 190 mph?
I consider anything you compete against someone as a sport….
You also have to be able to drive that car for 3-5 hours or more, with out drinking or eating, they get very dehydrated

The American Heritage Dictionary defines Sport as an activity that involves physical action and has a set body of rules. Nascar drivers have been known to lose 10 after a race. They work up bigger sweats than football, baseball, and basketball players. Nascar also has a handbook filled with rules. Its not only a sport, its a team sport. A driver can’t win without a good pit crew. These guy play there sport for longer than any other athletes. Some races can last 4 1/2 hours. Nascar is sport whether people that hate it like it.

well I agree to ur point of "driving round & round a track" but not to the point of "no physical activity".driving at speeds of 250to300kph,needs a great attention & excellent reflexes especialy with all fast cars around.driver have to face certain forces like G force, air pressure pulling in of rear car by the one ahead, overtakings & avoiding collisions.it is a game that really causes a great rush of adrenaline.
